Manchester Ritz 14th March 2026

Back at what is probably my favourite venue in Manchester, the Ritz. There is just something about the place. The size, the layout, the history. It always feels like the perfect setting for a night of live music.

Interestingly, this one was not sold out, which made for a much more relaxed experience. Plenty of space, no crushing crowds and even better, we were asked on the way in if we wanted to move forward about 12 rows. For some reason we turned it down. Still not sure why. One of those decisions you regret almost immediately.

🎻 A Different Spin on Britpop

The concept is simple but quite effective. Take the anthems of the Britpop era and give them a full orchestral treatment.

What you get is a set packed with familiar tracks, reworked with strings, brass and a more cinematic feel. Some songs really benefit from it, adding a new layer and depth that you do not always get from the original recordings.

Others feel a little less suited to the format, losing a bit of the raw energy that made them what they were in the first place.

🎤 Guest Appearances

A couple of standout moments came with the guest appearances.

Simon Fowler from Ocean Colour Scene stepped in and delivered exactly what you would expect. Confident, effortless and a proper nod to the era.

Then there was Saffron from Republica, bringing a completely different energy to the stage. Instantly recognisable and still full of attitude, her performance gave the night a bit of a lift when it needed it.

🎶 Atmosphere and Execution

The crowd were clearly into it. There is something about Britpop that just connects, especially in a city like Manchester where a lot of that history still feels close to the surface.

Other reviews have mentioned how the show leans heavily into nostalgia rather than reinvention, and that feels about right. It is more of a celebration of the era than a bold reinterpretation.

The orchestral backing is tight and well executed, but at times you do find yourself missing the grit and edge of the original bands.

🧠 Final Thoughts

All in all, a decent night at a great venue.

It was enjoyable, different enough to keep things interesting and packed with enough familiar moments to keep the crowd engaged. That said, I am not sure it is something I would rush back to see again.

A solid concept, well delivered, but maybe more of a one time experience.
