Derwent Edge, Ladybower Reservoir and The Wheelstones
Sunshine, sweeping views and a return route rethink
Hike Details
π₯Ύ Derwent Edge, Ladybower Reservoir and The Wheelstones
This one got off to a rare perfect start. We actually set off early and everything went to plan.
We arrived mid morning and parking was an absolute doddle for once. No stress, no circling, just straight in and boots on. Considering how busy Ladybower Reservoir can get, that felt like a win before we had even started.
The weather was spot on too. Clear skies and sunshine, one of those days where you know you have picked the right time to get out.
π The Climb to Derwent Edge
The hike itself sits comfortably in the moderate category. Nothing too punishing but enough to get the legs going.
The paths heading up towards Derwent Edge and on to the Wheelstones are clear and easy to follow, making it a great route if you just want to get into a steady rhythm without worrying too much about navigation.
As you climb, the views open up across the moors with that classic Peak District feel. Wide, open and slightly wild.
πͺ¨ The Wheelstones Stop
We made it to the Wheelstones and it felt like the perfect place to stop.
Out came the packed lunches, a few minutes to take it all in and grab some photos. It is one of those spots where you naturally linger a bit longer than planned.
Definitely the highlight of the hike.
π§ The Return That Wasnβt
The plan was to follow a circular route back down towards the reservoir and loop back to the car park.
That did not quite go to plan.
We struggled to find a clear path heading down. What looked like the route quickly turned into a steep section with no obvious trail, so rather than risk it we made the call to head back the way we came.
Not ideal, but the safer option and worth keeping in mind if you are planning the same route.
πΆββοΈ Trail Conditions and Crowd
Being midweek, it was fairly quiet which made a big difference.
You can tell though that in good weather and at weekends this place would be very busy. The combination of easy access, great views and well marked paths makes it a popular spot.
π§ Final Thoughts
This is a solid hike with plenty going for it. Great views, straightforward ascent and a quality stop at the Wheelstones.
The only downsides are the limited parking and the slightly unclear return routes if you are trying to make it circular.
Still, on a day like this, it is hard to complain.
A good, honest Peak District walk that delivers exactly what you want from a few hours out.
