Theatre Review: Hamilton
History, hip hop and a five star night at the Palace Theatre
🎬 Hamilton Review 🎬
🍿 5 out of 5
A few people have been chomping at the bit for this week’s review 😂
So this time, we head to the theatre 🎭 and what a choice it turned out to be.
🎭 Production details
- Starring: Shaq Taylor, Sam Oladeinde, Daniel Boys
- Director: Thomas Kail
- Running time: 2h 45m
🇺🇸 The story
Hamilton tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s Founding Fathers an immigrant from the West Indies who rose to become George Washington’s right hand man during the Revolutionary War and helped shape the foundations of modern America.
It sounds like heavy historical drama on paper, but this production delivers it in a way that feels urgent, modern and completely alive.
🎤 Style & performance
The plot is flawlessly delivered through a constant flow of rhyming rap, hip-hop beats and human beatbox backdrops. The energy never drops. I especially loved the 8 Mile style rap offs they inject a contemporary edge that keeps the storytelling sharp, playful and hugely entertaining.
The King’s appearances deserve special mention. Those moments bring perfectly timed humour and theatrical exaggeration that land brilliantly with the audience and provide much needed comic relief without breaking the momentum.
⭐ Overall impression
I don’t get to the theatre as often as I’d like, but Hamilton is hands down the best theatre experience I’ve ever had. It’s bold, confident, emotionally charged and completely unforgettable.
The music sticks with you, the performances are outstanding, and the storytelling is razor sharp. It never feels like homework even if you’re not usually into theatre, this one pulls you in and refuses to let go.
🎟️ Final thoughts
Hamilton is running at Manchester Palace Theatre until 24th February, and if you get the chance to go take it. You won’t be disappointed, even if theatre “isn’t your thing”.
Thanks to everyone who helped convince me to go.
The mantra “I’m not throwing away my shot” is one we should probably all carry into life.
Be there or be square.
History nerds 🤓 will absolutely love it.
