EP Review: Spangled Always in Colour EP
Pure Mancunian funk, heart and forward momentum
🌞🍺 In the glorious sunshine, chilling in the West Wing, it felt like the perfect moment to finally sit down and smash out a review of
@Spangledband Always in Colour.
This EP is everything I love about Spangled: bold, confident, unapologetically Mancunian, and packed with groove, heart and ambition. I’ve followed these lads everywhere, and they hold a real soft spot for me this feels like another big step forward.
🎧 Track by track
➡️ Swordfish Trauma
Pure Mancunian funk straight out of the blocks. Get this in your ears immediately.
The bass drives hard while the guitars from Nial & J scrape the skyline sharp, angular, and full of intent. It sets the tone perfectly.
➡️ Crank Up the Splendour
Nobody does this quite like Spangled.
Quirky, feel good brilliance that just works. It’s playful without being throwaway and effortlessly cool without trying too hard.
➡️ Little Tom
An absolute banger.
If you’ve never experienced this live, more fool you. This is the sound of a band that understands how to move a room sweaty, joyful and communal.
➡️ Home
This one hits different.
You can feel how much this track means to the lads and to everyone who’s been there from the start. There’s pride, reflection and gratitude woven into it.
Proud of you lads 🙏
➡️ Horizons Glance
What a track and video.
Strong visuals, strong message there’s a strong protest and flare game about this track (especially the video) without it ever feeling forced. Confident songwriting with something to say.
➡️ The Road Ahead
My EP favourite.
A War of the Worlds style opening pulls you straight in, before a filthy, metronomic bassline takes over brilliant work from Nial. The spoken intros are mint and add real atmosphere. Absolute magic.
🏙️ Final thoughts
Always in Colour feels like a band fully leaning into who they are.
Uniquely Manchester, soaked in the influences of the greats that came before them around the 0161, but never trapped by nostalgia.
Spangled are pushing forward, sharpening their sound and backing it up with belief.
Onwards and upwards 🚀🎸💥
I’m a massive fan and this EP only cements why.
